There is some evidence that Scopes volunteered to undertake this challenge. The most famous American criminal lawyer of the time, and an opponent of organized religion, Clarence Darrow (1857-1938), volunteered his services to help the defense. William Jennings Bryan, who had been heavily involved in the anti-Evolution Movement and was personally associated with Fundamentalism, volunteered to help the prosecution. The outcome and the trial (Scopes was found guilty, but the verdict was later reversed on a technicality) was not nearly as important to American society as what the media made of the event.

The Fundamentalist Renaissance The development of this subculture during the years of retreat since 1925 clearly had unwitting positive effects on the Movement that have also made possible the Religious Right's emergence as a political force. The subculture that emerged, with its unique values and institutions, helped Fundamentalists preserve their beliefs and their vision during the following decades of flux and the relativizing of values.

Shields. FUNDAMENTALIST DECLINE AND RENEWAL With its image firmly fixed in the press and in the minds of most Americans, the press and academia soon lost interest in Fundamentalism by the 1930s. Given its negative image and the apparent hopelessness of its influencing American society and its churches, it is hardly surprising that retreat into the ghetto seemed to be the only option. Thus Fundamentalists intensified their work in forming more of their own educational institutions (Bible Schools), mission organizations, and denominations.
